As an Egyptian intern or junior doctor, you may encounter critically ill patients who require immediate medical attention. One tool that can help you quickly assess the severity of a patient's illness is the NEWS score.
The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) is a system that uses simple clinical observations to identify patients who may be deteriorating. NEWS consists of six physiological parameters: respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, level of consciousness or new confusion, and temperature. The score assigned to each parameter is based on how far it deviates from the normal range, and the total score indicates the patient's overall risk of deterioration.
Using NEWS can help you quickly identify patients who may require urgent intervention or escalation of care. For example, a NEWS score of 5 or more indicates that the patient is at high risk of deterioration and should be closely monitored. In contrast, a score of 7 or more indicates that the patient is at very high risk and immediate intervention is necessary.
It's important to note that NEWS should be used in conjunction with clinical judgement and should not replace a thorough clinical assessment. Additionally, using NEWS should be accompanied by appropriate protocols and training to ensure accurate and consistent use.
As an Egyptian intern or junior doctor, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the use of NEWS and how it can help you quickly identify patients at risk of deterioration. The following resources can help you learn more about NEWS and its use:
